Hum Dekhenge (translation: we shall witness) is one of of Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s most iconic works of protest poetry, written as a literary critique and a subtle form of resistance against the military dictatorship of Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan. Faiz wrote Hum Dekhenge in 1979, two years after Zia took power in a military coup in 1977 and imposed a martial law in Pakistan, a period characterised by restrictions on civil liberties and grave human rights abuses. It was later published in Faiz’s poetry collection titled Mere Dil Mere Musafir.
Faiz wrote the Hum Dekhenge using powerful sacred and political metaphors to challenge Zia’s authoritarian rule. The nazm services as a reminder to the tyrants of the promised day, the day of justice and retribution. His words resonate with the struggles of the oppressed, assuring them that a day of reckoning is inevitable, while cautioning the oppressors and reminding them that it is a day that “we shall witness.”
The influence of Hum Dekhinge extends far beyond the literary realm. The poem has been recited at protests globally, becoming a universal symbol of hope and defiance against injustice. Artists, activists, and leaders have drawn inspiration from Faiz’s words, leveraging the power of pen and poetry to spur a revolution. The poem achieved legendary status in 1986 when singer Iqbal Bano defiantly performed it before a massive crowd in Lahore.
Needless to say, Faiz’s words had a price, a price that was paid with imprisonment, a period during which he penned several of his works.

It is certain that we, too, shall witness.
The day that has been promised,
And is decreed in the tablet of eternity.
When the mountains of tyranny and oppression,
Will blow away like cotton.

Above the heads of the rulers.
When the deities of false gods shall be thrown out,
From the abode of God.
And we, the faithful,
Will be seated on exalted cushions.
