Paisha War Qatilo (O Professional killers), written by Ahmad Faraz after the 1971 tragedy in Pakistan and the subsequent independence of East Pakistan, addresses the Pakistan Army. Instead of learning from past mistakes, the army seized power yet again just six years later, suppressing the will of the people, imposing a dictatorship, and perpetuating a reign of tyranny and oppression, which has become symbolic of the Pakistan Army.
Among other things, Ahmad Faraz also refers to General Niazi’s attempts to “change the ethnicity” of Bengalis in East Pakistan, and sheds light on the bloodshed from the border (present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) to Punjab, as well as the brutal killings of civilians in Bolan.
It is tragic that Faraz’s poem remains as relevant in present-day Pakistan as it was in the 1970s, reflecting the ongoing atrocities committed by the Pakistani army against its own people.
Note:
As a rule of thumb, we will have the full original version first — so it retains its literary and artistic expression fully and those who understand the language can experience its rhythm and structure uninterrupted — followed by its translation into English and/or other languages so those who do not read the original language fluently, or are learning, easily understand the context.
Moreover, while have tried to translate ‘paisha war qatilo’ into English, it must, however, be noted that a translated poem may carry the message, but it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.
Paisha war qatilo by Ahmad Faraz

Until now, I have composed odes in your praise
And today, I am ashamed of my own poems
I am embarrassed by the sanctity of my verses
And dismayed by the demands of my talent
I feel ashamed before my loved ones

Whenever a foreign shadow or enemy’s hand fell,
Upon my beloved land.
Whenever the killers stood opposed in battle,
And conflict erupted along my borders,
Whether through my blood or the power of my words,
I offered whatever I could.

With tears, I bid you farewell,
Whenever the battlefields called you.
What if you returned triumphant,
Even defeat did not strip you from my heart.

You sold your honour in exchange for life,
Yet, we accepted you.
Those in the East, with hearts torn apart, were also our own,
Whose blood you came to smear on your face.
Did you come to violate the sanctity of mothers,
Or to crush the rebellion?
You couldn’t alter their fate,
But you aimed to change the course of their generations.
Whatever the outcome, so be it.
The night passed, but their dreams were left shattered by you

You arrived with grandeur and arrogance
And then departed for prison with great shame
You came with swords in hands
But left with chains around your neck and shackles on your feet.
Like the Gurkhas under British rule,
Who spread terror without restraint,
And like the cruel white men in Vietnam,
Who falsely accused those who stood for justice.
You are no different from them today,
For they, too, had rifles, uniforms, and names like yours.

Yet, I still called you innocent,
To console the people of the city.
Though my poetry was no balm for their wounds
Still, I made an effort to offer some remedy,
For the sake of lifting the spirits of my hopeless people

You must remember those days as well
When you returned from captivity.
We, with torn hearts, stood along the roads,
With our hearts filled and eyes brimming,
Forgetting the bitterness of our humiliation
We showered you with flowers of honour
Those whose jaws were stained with the blood of their own people,
Came to surpass all limits of cruelty,
After the massacre in Bengal, they arrived in Balochistan,
To slit the throats of the citizens.

Today, from the border to Punjab and Mehran,
You have set up slaughterhouses, O warriors.
On whose orders do you cause this devastation?
Before whom are you bowing down, O warriors?
Whose imperial command is this?
For whose sake is this slaughter and bloodshed, O warriors?
Who knew that, O descendent of Shapur,
You would become the embodiment of a dark night?
Yesterday too, you were the throne-bearers of the oppressors
Today too, you remain the guardians of [their] courts.

For the sake of a dictator’s crown,
The edge of the sword is at everyone’s throats.
You have seen the caravans of the masses,
Waving banners of rebellion in their hands.
The scabs of blood dried on woods,
Declare that these scenes are apocalyptic.
Yesterday, love resided in our hearts for you,
Today, the flames that rise are that of hatred
Today, the poet owes a debt to the land
For now, blood flows in the pen, not ink

Your veil is lifted so it has become evident,
O professional killers, you are no soldiers.
Now the heads of all the unconscious are demanded.
The issue is no longer confined to the royal crown.

Main ne ab tak tumhare qaseede likhe
Aur aaj apne nagmoun se sharminda hoon
Apne shairoun ki hurmat se hoon munfail
Apne fun ke taqaazoun se sharminda hoon
Apne dil geer pyaron se sharminda hoon
Jab kabhi meri dil zarra khaak par
Saaya ghair ya dast dushman parra
Jab bhi qatil muqabil saf-e-aara huye
Hum ne phir bhi kiya hai gawara tumhein
Seena chaakan-e-mashriq bhi apne hi the
Jin ka khoon munh pe malne ko tum aaye the
Mamta’on ki taqdees ko lootne
Ya baghawat kuchalne ko tum aaye the
In ki taqdeer tum kya badalte magar
In ki naslain badalne ko tum aaye the
Is ka anjaam jo kuch hua so hua
Shab gayi khwab tum se pareshan gaye
Kis jalal o roonat se waarid huye
Kis khijalat se tum soye zindan gaye
Tegh-dar dast-o-kaf dar wahan aaye the
Touq-dar gardan o paabjolaan gaye
Jaise bartaanwi raaj mein gorakhay
Wahshaton ke chalan aam un ke bhi the
Jaise safaak gore the Vietnam mein
Haq paraston pe ilzaam un ke bhi the
Tum bhi aaj un se kuch mukhtalif to nahi
Riflen, wardiyaan, naam un ke bhi the
Phir bhi main ne tumhein be-khata hi kaha
Khalqat-e-shehar ki dil dahi ke liye
Go mere sheyr zakhamon ke marham na the
Phir bhi ek sa’ee charah gari ke liye
Apne be-aas logon ke jee ke liye
Yaad honge tumhein phir woh ayyam bhi
Tum aseeri se jab laut kar aaye the
Hum dareeda jigar raaston mein kharre
Apne dil apni aankhon mein bhar laaye the
Apni tahqeer ki talkhiyan bhool kar
Tum pe tawqeer ke phool barsaye the
Kis ke aage ho tum sar nigoon ghaziyo
Kis shenshah-e-aali ka farman hai
Kis ke khatir hai yeh kasht-o-khoon ghaziyoun
Kya khabar thi ke ai shaparak zadgaan
Tum malamat bano ge shab-e-taar ki
Kal bhi ghasib ke tum takht par daar the
Aaj bhi paasdari hai darbaar ki
Ek aamir ki dastaar ke wastay
Sb ki shahrag pe hai nauk talwar ki
Tum ne dekhe hain jamhoor ke qafle
Un ke haathon mein parcham baghawat ke hain
Pipriyon par jami pipriyan khoon ki
Keh rahi hain yeh manzar qayamat ke hain
Kal tumhare liye pyaar seenon mein tha
Ab jo sholay uthe hain woh nafrat ke hain
Aaj shair pe bhi qarz mitti ka hai
Ab qalam mein lahu hai siyahi nahi
Khol utra tumhara tou saabit hua
Paisha-war qatilon, tum sipahi nahi
Ab sab hi be-zameeron ke sar chahiye
Ab faqat masla taaj-e-shahi nahi
