Musheer (translation: advisor) is a satirical poem written by Pakistani poet, Habib Jalib. Jalib wrote it in response to a conversation he had with Hafiz Jalandari when the latter assumed the role of an advisor to Pakistan’s first military dictator, Ayub Khan.
In Musheer, Jalib uses satire to highlight the moral bankruptcy of those who serve corrupt, cruel tyrants for their own interests, and highlight their complicity in the crimes committed by these tyrants.
As Pakistan continues to grapple with military dictators and a predatory ruling elite, there is section of society – including journalists, intellectuals, human rights activists, academics, researchers and more – that shamelessly justifies and defends the unconstitutional actions of army generals and illegitimate rulers, all for protecting their interests. And thus, we reflect on this poem by Habib Jalib, and further translate it into English to make it more accessible for our readers.
Note:
As a rule of thumb, we will have the full original version first — so it retains its literary and artistic expression fully and those who understand the language can experience its rhythm and structure uninterrupted — followed by its translation into English and/or other languages so those who do not read the original language fluently, or are learning, easily understand the context.
Moreover, while we at Bahaaristan have tried to translate ‘Musheer’ into English, it must, however, be noted that a translated poem may carry the message, but it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.
Musheer by Habib Jalib

I said to him
These hundred million
Are the essence of ignorance
Their conscience has gone to sleep
Every ray of hope
Is lost in the darkness
It is true
They are the living dead
They are completely ignorant
And are a disease upon life
And you hold in your hands
The cure for their ills

I said to him
You are the light of God
You have intellect and awareness
The nation is with you
And only through your existence alone
Comes the country’s salvation
You are the sun of a new morning
After you, there is only darkness
The few who speak out
Are all trouble-makers
Rip out their tongues
Strangle their throats

I said to him
Those who were proud of their speech
Are now silenced
There is calm in the land
There is a stark difference
Between yesterday and today
People are imprisoned at their own expense
Under your rule
That man is great
Who lies at your doorstep
Whoever seeks refuge
Forgive his mistakes

I said to him
Every minister, every ambassador
Is an unmatched advisor
Ah, what a brilliant response
I swear by your mind
What an excellent choice
The officer is awake
While the nation sleeps
This minister of yours – Khan
Whenever he gives a statement
Everyone who reads it cries,
Bravo, bravo

I said to him
China is our friend
We would lay down our lives for it
But the system that they have
Do not go near it
Just salute it from afar
These hundred million donkeys
Called “the public”
Could surely never become rulers
You are certainty; they are mere illusion
My prayer is that
May you remain President forever
I said to him
Musheer by Habib Jalib in Roman Urdu
Mainey us se yeh kaha
Yeh jo das crore hain
Jahl ka nichor hain
Unki fikr so gayi
Har umeed ki kiran
Zulmatoon mein kho gayi
Yeh khabar durust hai
Unki maut ho gayi
zindagi ka rog hain
Aur tere paas hai
Inke dard ki dawa
Mainey us se yeh kaha
Tu Khuda ka noor hai
Aql hai shaoor hai
Quom tere saath hai
Tere hi wujood se
Mulk ki nijaat hai
Tu hai mehr-e-subah-no
Tere baad raat hai
Bolte jo chand hain
Sab yeh shar pasand hain
Unki khench lay zabaan
Unka ghont day galla
Mainey us se yeh kaha
Jin ko tha zubaan pe naaz
Chup hain woh zubaan daraaz
Chayn hai samaaj mein
Be-misaal farq hai
Kal mein aur aaj mein
Apne kharch par hain qaid
Log tere raaj mein
Aadmi hai woh bara
Dar pe jo rahe para
Jo panaah maang le
Us ki bakhsh de khata
Mainey us se yeh kaha
Har wazir har safeer
Be-nazir hai musheer
Waah kya jawab hai
Tere zehan ki qasam
Khoob intikhaab hai
Jaagti hai afsari
Quom mehw-o-khawab hai
Yeh tera wazir khan
De raha hai jo bayan
Parh ke unko har koi
Kah raha hai marhaba
Mainey us se yeh kaha
Cheen (China) apna yaar hai
Is pe jaan nisaar hai
Par wahan hai jo nizaam
Is taraf na jaayo
Usko door se salaam
Das crore yeh gadhay
Jinka naam hai awaam
Kya banein ge hukmaran
Tu “yaqeen” hai yeh “guman”
Apni to dua hai yeh
Sadar to rahe sada
Mainey us se yeh kaha
