Nisar Main Teri Galiyoun Ke (translation: I would devote my life for your streets, O homeland) is one of Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s most iconic works of protest poetry, written during a period of political oppression and military dictatorship, while Faiz was himself imprisoned.

Decades later, the poem remains highly relevant as people across the world grapple with oppression. More importantly, in this climate of fear and mourning amid brutal state repression, Nisar Main Teri Galiyoun Ke serves as a sweet reminder the reign of tyrants are short lived, and that those who remain devoted to the cause of freedom will indeed turn the page.

Note:

As a rule of thumb, we will have the full original version first — so it retains its literary and artistic expression fully and those who understand the language can experience its rhythm and structure uninterrupted — followed by its translation into English and/or other languages so those who do not read the original language fluently, or are learning, easily understand the context.

Moreover, while have tried to translate ‘nisar main teri galiyoun ke’ into English, it must, however, be noted that a translated poem may carry the message, but it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.

Nisar main teri galiyoun ke by Faiz Ahmad Faiz

I would devote my life for your streets, O homeland,

Where the custom has become that no one may walk with head held high.

Where, if anyone dares to step out,

He must avert their gaze, and guard their body and soul.

For the noble-hearted, this is now the order of the day:

That [they are] locked in stones and bricks, while dogs roam free.

It is enough to draw tyranny’s eager hand,

That a few passionate souls dare speak your name.

The slaves of greed serve as both accuser and judge;

whom, then, do we choose as counsel, where do we plead our case?

Yet those fated to live through such times

Spend their days in your mournful memories

As the window of my prison cell darkens, my heart imagines,

That your forehead must be sprinkled with stars.

And as my chains glitter, I believe,

That dawn must have broken across your face.

In short, I live in the visions of your dusks and dawn,

Imprisoned within the shadows of prison walls and door.

Thus the world has always grappled with tyranny,

Neither their (tyrant’s) ritual is new, nor our rebellion.

Thus we have always coaxed flowers to bloom in fire,

Neither their (tyrant’s) defeat is new, nor our victory.

And thus, we do not blame the heavens

Nor let hopelessness take root in our hearts.

And so, If we are apart today, tomorrow we shall be together.

This one night’s separation is nothing to grieve over.

And so, if the oppressor’s star is at its zenith right now, so what?

A four-day godhood (reign) is of no consequence

Those who hold fast to their vow of devotion to you

Hold the power to turn the tides of time.
