Poetry by Faiz Ahmad Faiz

Intisab by Faiz Ahmad Faiz

Intisaab by Faiz Ahmad Faiz is a marching, singing paean of a poem, that is political and yet sophisticated and stunningly visual poetic work.
Start

There are some poems that have an anthem-like, declamatory quality. Poems that demand not so much to be read aloud as to be shouted into microphones, screamed, fed line by line to some roaring mob that raises its fists high in support after every stanza. Poems that seem addressed, not to a single person, but to the people.

And then there’s Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s Intisaab (translation: dedicated); a marching, singing paean of a poem, at once heroic and sorrowful, at once evocative and delicate.

There are some unforgettable lines here and some beautiful images, but the overall effect is of being swept up in the urgency of a historical moment, in the tide of an entire people and their determination to stand firm against suffering and oppression. This is a poem whose every line pays a tribute to a section of the society, a poem that screams Revolution.

It is said that poetry and politics do not generally go well together; for in politics, it is imperative that words and phrases are full of meaning and purpose, and rawness and stridency that makes for good politics doesn’t always fit comfortably with more poetic prose and aims. And thus, poems with a ‘message’ often end up sacrificing poetic merit for political momentum, so that they remain memorable not so much for their poetry per se, but for the protest they contain.

This is emphatically not true of Intisaab. This is a poem that is as political as you can get, and yet is also a sophisticated and stunningly visual poetic work.

Faiz writes from a well-spring of humanism, from a desire to celebrate the common people. He understands in his deeply democratic heart that it is here that true power lies, in the suffering of ordinary men and women, in the uncomplaining courage with which they bear whatever History thrusts upon them. And Faiz is a poet of his people; that is why he matters, and that is why his legacy and words still endure today.

In this post, we have translated Intisab by Faiz Ahmad Faiz into English.

Note:

As a rule of thumb, we will have the full original version first — so it retains its literary and artistic expression fully and those who understand the language can experience its rhythm and structure uninterrupted — followed by its translation into English and/or other languages so those who do not read the original language fluently, or are learning, easily understand the context.

Moreover, while we at Bahaaristan have tried to translate ‘intisab’ into English, it must, however, be noted that a translated poem may carry the message, but it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.

To the sorrow of this day

The sorrow of today that has turned its face from the life’s vibrant garden

This forest of dying leaves, that is my country

This assembly of anguish, that is my country

The king of the universe, provider of sustenance in this world, God’s vicegerent on Earth;

To him – the farmer

Whose livestock was stolen by tyrants

Whose daughter was snatched away by dacoits

Who has lost, from his palm-sized farm, a finger to the record keeper

And another to the government as tax

Whose proud turban has been ripped to shreds

Beneath the feet of the powerful

To those grieving mothers

Whose children wail all night, and

Will not be comforted by the exhausted, sleep-deprived shoulders

Do not share their woes

And are not consoled by tears and entreaties

After blossoming on every curtain and balcony

Have withered away

To those wives

Whose bodies

Have grown tired of the loveless, treacherous beds

To those widows

آرزومند سینوں کی اپنے پسینے میں جلنے کی بو

To the nooks, alleys and neighbourhoods

With stinking litter, with which the moon

Habitually performs ablution

And from whose shadows are heard lamentations of

The hennaed veils

The tinkling of bangles

The fragrance of loosened hair

The smell of passionate bodies burning in their own sweat

Who knocked on the doors of administrators

Petitioning for books and pen

With hands spread wide

But never returned home

Those innocents, who, in their naiveté

Came with their little lamps

Hoping for a kindling flame

Only to find a place of shadows, where undying nights were being distributed

Have burnt and turned star-like

Who, like the fragrance of flowers

Have surrendered themselves to their own message
