Khoon phir khoon hai (Translation: Blood is, after all, blood) is a powerful poem written by the Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi. It was written as a reaction to the CIA-instigated assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the hero of Congolese independence in 1961.
Khoon phir khoon hai was published in Sahir’s book Aao Ki Koi Khwaab Bunein, which contains several poems written in reaction to specific events in the 1950s and 1960s.
Note:
As a rule of thumb, we will have the full original version first — so it retains its literary and artistic expression fully and those who understand the language can experience its rhythm and structure uninterrupted — followed by its translation into English and/or other languages so those who do not read the original language fluently, or are learning, easily understand the context.
Moreover, while have tried to translate ‘khoon phir khoon hai’ into English, it must, however, be noted that a translated poem may carry the message, but it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.
Khoon phir khoon hai by Sahir Ludhianvi
Khoon phir khoon hai by Sahir Ludhianvi with English Translation
Cruelty is, after all, cruelty — when it grows beyond limits, it perishes.
Blood is, after all, blood — when it drips, it congeals.
Whether it congeals on the desert dust or on the executioner’s palm,
On the forehead of justice or on the chains of the captive,
On the blade of oppression or on the body of the slain,
Blood is, after all, blood—when it drips, it congeals.
No matter how stealthily one hides,
Blood itself leaves a trail to the dwellings of the tyrant.
No matter how high conspiracies try to weave the veils of darkness,
Every drop [of blood] steps forth bearing a lamp in its palm.
Say to the useless, disgraced fate of cruelty,
Say to the cunning design of tyrants,
Tell the Laila of the League of Nations:
Blood is wild; it can splatter and stain your garment;
It is a fierce flame; it can consume the harvest.
The blood you wished to bury in the execution ground,
Has spilled out today into the streets and the bazaars;
As a flame, as a slogan, or as a stone.
When blood flows, bayonets cannot contain it.
When it raises its head, laws cannot restrain it.
What is oppression, after all? What is its worth?
Oppression is merely oppression, from its beginning to its end.
Blood is, after all, blood, it can take different forms.
Forms that, try as you might, cannot be erased.
Flames that, try as you might, cannot be extinguished.
Slogans that, try as you might, cannot be suppressed.
Khoon phir khoon hai by Sahir Ludhianvi in Roman
Zulm phir zulm hai, barhta hai to mit jata hai
Khoon phir khoon hai, tapke ga to jam jayega
Khak-e-sehra pe jame ya kaf-e-qatil pe jame
Faraq-e-insaf pe ya pa-e-silasil pe jame
Tegh-e-bedaad pe ya laasha-e-bismil pe jame
Khoon phir khoon hai, tapke ga to jam jayega
Lakh baithe koi chhup chhup ke kameen gahoon mein
Khoon khud deta hai jalladon ke maskan ka suraagh
Sazishein lakh urhati rahin zulmat ka naqaab
Le ke har boond nikalti hai hatheli pe charaagh
Zulm ki qismat-e-nakara o ruswa se kaho
Jabr ki hikmat-e-purkar ki eema se kaho
Mahmil-e-majlis-e-aqwam ki laila se kaho
Khoon deewana hai, daaman pe lapak sakta hai
Shola tund hai, khirman pe lapak sakta hai
Tum ne jis khoon ko maqtal mein chhupana chaha
Aaj woh koocha-o-bazaar mein aa nikla hai
Kahin shola, kahin naara, kahin patthar ban kar
Khoon chalta hai to rukta nahi sangeenon se
Sar uthta hai to dabta nahi aa’eenon se
Zulm ki baat hi kya, zulm ki auqaat hi kya
Zulm bas zulm hai, aaghaz se anjaam talak
Khoon phir khoon hai, so shakal badal sakta hai
Aisi shaklein ke mitaao to mitaye na bane
Aise sholay ke bujhao to bujhaye na bane
Aise naare ke dabao to dabaye na bane
