Muhasara | Ahmad Faraz

Muhasara is a powerful poem by Ahmad Faraz against Zia Ul Haq’s military regime.

Note: We have tried to translate Muhasara into English. However, it must be noted that while a translated poem may carry the message, it can never fully capture its essence — the depth of thought, the layered emotions, and the beauty of the language that make the original poem so powerful.

Verse 1: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرے غنیم نے مجھ کو پیام بھیجا ہے
کہ حلقہ زن ہیں مرے گرد لشکری اس کے

[Meray ghaneem ne mujh ko payaam bheja hai]
[Ke halqa zan hain meray gird lashkari us ke]

My enemy has sent me a message
That his armies have encircled me on all sides

Verse 2: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

فصیل شہر کے ہر برج ہر منارے پر
کماں بہ دست ستادہ ہیں عسکری اس کے

[Faseel-e-shehar ke har burj har minaaray par]
[Kamaan ba-dast sitada hain askari us ke]

On every tower and minaret of the city’s walls
His troops stand with bows in their hands

Verse 3: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

وہ برق لہر بجھا دی گئی ہے جس کی تپش
وجود خاک میں آتش فشاں جگاتی تھی

[Woh barq-e-lehar bujha di gayi hai jis ki tapish]
[Wujood-e-khaak mein aatish-fishaan jagaati thi]

The lightning bolt has been extinguished, whose heat
Ignited the volcano within the body of clay

Verse 4: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

بچھا دیا گیا بارود اس کے پانی میں
وہ جوئے آب جو میری گلی کو آتی تھی

[Bicha diya gaya baarood us ke paani mein]
[Woh ju-e-aab jo meri gali ko aati thi]

Explosives have been laid in the waters
Of the stream that flowed through my street

Verse 5: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

سبھی دریدہ دہن اب بدن دریدہ ہوئے
سپرد دار و رسن سارے سر کشیدہ ہوئے

[Sabhi dareeda-dahan ab badan dareeda huay]
[Supurd-e-daar-o-rasan saaray sar kashida huay]

All those with outspoken mouths lie torn apart

Every rebellious head has been sent to the gallows

Verse 6: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

تمام صوفی و سالک سبھی شیوخ و امام
امید لطف پہ ایوان کج کلاہ میں ہیں

[Tamaam sufi o saalik sabhi shuyookh o imaam]
[Umeed-e-lutf pe aiwaan-e-kaj-kalaah mein hain]

All the sufis and saints, every scholar and imam

Hopes to find favour in the rulers’ court

Verse 7: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

معززین عدالت بھی حلف اٹھانے کو
مثال سائل مبرم نشستہ راہ میں ہیں

[Moazzazeen-e-adalat bhi half uthane ko]
[Misaal-e-saa’il-e-mubram nashista-raah mein hain]

Even the judges are ready to take their oaths

Like desperate beggars on the roadside

Verse 8: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

تم اہل حرف کہ پندار کے ثناگر تھے
وہ آسمان ہنر کے نجوم سامنے ہیں

[Tum ahl-e-harf ke pindaar ke sanagar thay]
[Woh aasmaan-e-hunar ke nujoom saamne hain]

You—the people of the word—who sang praises of arrogance and self-deception

Those brightest talents are in front of you

Verse 9: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

بس اک مصاحب دربار کے اشارے پر
گداگران سخن کے ہجوم سامنے ہیں

[Bas ek musahib-e-darbaar ke ishaaray par]
[Gadagaran-e-sukhan ke hujoom saamne hain]

With a mere signal from a court attendant

A crowd of word-beggars (peddlers of borrowed words) bows at our feet

Verse 10: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

قلندران وفا کی اساس تو دیکھو
تمہارے ساتھ ہے کون آس پاس تو دیکھو

[Qalandaraan-e-wafa ki asaas to dekho]
[Tumhaaray saath hai kaun, aas paas to dekho]

Look at the principles of those “loyal dervishes”

Who stands with you? Look around!

Verse 11: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

سو شرط یہ ہے جو جاں کی امان چاہتے ہو
تو اپنے لوح و قلم قتل گاہ میں رکھ دو

[So shart yeh hai jo jaan ki amaan chahte ho]
[To apne loh o qalam qatal-gaah mein rakh do]

So these are the terms: if you seek safety for your life

Lay down your pen and slate in the slaughterhouse

Verse 12: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

وگرنہ اب کے نشانہ کمان داروں کا
بس ایک تم ہو سو غیرت کو راہ میں رکھ دو

[Wagarna ab ke nishaana kamaan-daaron ka]
[Bas aik tum ho so ghairat ko raah mein rakh do]

Otherwise, this time, the archers’ target
Is you alone, so cast your integrity aside

Verse 13: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

یہ شرط نامہ جو دیکھا تو ایلچی سے کہا
اسے خبر نہیں تاریخ کیا سکھاتی ہے

[Yeh shartnaama jo dekha to ailchi se kaha]
[Isay khabar nahin tareekh kya sikhaati hai]

Seeing these terms, I told the envoy

“He is oblivious of what history teaches”

Verse 14: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

کہ رات جب کسی خورشید کو شہید کرے
تو صبح اک نیا سورج تراش لاتی ہے

[Ke raat jab kisi khursheed ko shaheed kare]
[To subah ek naya sooraj taraash laati hai]

When the night martyrs a sun

The dawn sculpts a new one

Verse 15: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

سو یہ جواب ہے میرا مرے عدو کے لیے
کہ مجھ کو حرص کرم ہے نہ خوف خمیازہ

[So yeh jawaab hai mera meray adoo ke liye]
[Ke mujh ko hirs-e-karam hai na khauf-e-khamiaaza]

So this is my reply to my foe
I seek no mercy, nor do I fear the consequences

Verse 16: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

اسے ہے سطوت شمشیر پر گھمنڈ بہت
اسے شکوہ قلم کا نہیں ہے اندازہ

[Usay hai satwat-e-shamsheer par ghamand bohot]
[Usay shikvah-e-qalam ka nahin hai andaaza]

He boasts of the sword’s might,

But is unaware of the pen’s majesty

Verse 17: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں کردار اس محافظ کا
جو اپنے شہر کو محصور کر کے ناز کرے

[Mera qalam nahin kirdaar us muhafiz ka]
[Jo apne shehar ko mehsoor kar ke naaz kare]

My pen is not a tool for that protector

Who is proud of besieging his own city

Verse 18: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں کاسہ کسی سبک سر کا
جو غاصبوں کو قصیدوں سے سرفراز کرے

[Mera qalam nahin kaasa kisi sabak sar ka]
[Jo ghaasibon ko qaseedon se sarfaraz kare]

My pen is not a begging bowl for that fool
Who glorifies usurpers with odes

Verse 19: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں اوزار اس نقب زن کا
جو اپنے گھر کی ہی چھت میں شگاف ڈالتا ہے

[Mera qalam nahin auzaar us naqabzan ka]
[Jo apne ghar ki hi chhat mein shagaaf daalta hai]

My pen is not a tool of that burglar

Who breaches the roof of his own house

Verse 20: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں اس دزد نیم شب کا رفیق
جو بے چراغ گھروں پر کمند اچھالتا ہے

[Mera qalam nahin dosd-e-neem shab ka rafiq]
[Jo be-chiraagh gharon par kamand uchaalta hai]

My pen is not the accomplice of the midnight thief

Who scales the walls of darkened homes

Verse 21: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں تسبیح اس مبلغ کی
جو بندگی کا بھی ہر دم حساب رکھتا ہے

[Mera qalam nahin tasbeeh us muballigh ki]
[Jo bandagi ka bhi har dam hisaab rakhta hai]

My pen is not the rosary of that preacher
Who tallies every act of worship

Verse 22: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم نہیں میزان ایسے عدل کی
جو اپنے چہرے پہ دہرا نقاب رکھتا ہے

[Mera qalam nahin meezan aisay adl ki]
[Jo apne chehray pe dohra naqaab rakhta hai]

My pen is not the scale of that judge
Who wears a double veil on his face

Verse 23: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

مرا قلم تو امانت ہے میرے لوگوں کی
مرا قلم تو عدالت مرے ضمیر کی ہے

[Mera qalam to amaanat hai meray logon ki]
[Mera qalam to adalat meray zameer ki hai]

My pen is the trust of my people
My pen is the court of my conscience

Verse 24: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

اسی لیے تو جو لکھا تپاک جاں سے لکھا
جبھی تو لوچ کماں کا زبان تیر کی ہے

[Isi liye to jo likha tapaak-e-jaan se likha]
[Jabhi to loach kamaan ka zabaan teer ki hai]

And so, whatever I have written, I wrote with my soul

And why my words strike like an arrow

Verse 25: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

میں کٹ گروں کہ سلامت رہوں یقیں ہے مجھے
کہ یہ حصار ستم کوئی تو گرائے گا

[Main kat girun ke salaamat rahun yaqeen hai mujhe]
[Ke yeh hisaar-e-sitam koi to giraaye ga]

Whether I fall or remain safe, I am certain
That someone will shatter this siege of oppression

Verse 26: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

تمام عمر کی ایذا نصیبیوں کی قسم
مرے قلم کا سفر رائیگاں نہ جائے گا

[Tamaam umar ki aiza-nasibiyon ki qasam]
[Meray qalam ka safar raaigaan na jaaye ga]

I swear by the lifelong suffering of the ill-fated

The journey of my pen will not go in vain

Verse 27: Muhasara by Ahmad Faraz

سرشت عشق نے افتادگی نہیں پائی
تو قد سرو نہ بینی و سایہ پیمائی

[Sarisht-e-ishq ne aftaadgi nahin paayi]
[To qadd-e-sarw na beeni o saaya paymaayi]

The essence of my love cannot be erased—

You cannot see, nor measure, a tree’s shadow from its peak
